Getting ready to build a website can feel overwhelming. There’s so much to think about, plan for and decide. Let’s make it easy. Let’s break it down into five steps.

Choose your domain name and get a website host. This first step isn’t too complicated. A bit of keyword research will help you come up with a good domain name. You can register your domain name with your website host or you can register it separately. When choosing a host make sure they’re reliable, fit your budget and offer the features that you need.

Define the goal or purpose for your website. What do you want the website to accomplish? Why are you creating a website? This step will help ensure each element of your website supports your overall goal.

Plan your website. In this step, grab a pencil and a piece of paper, or use mind mapping software, and plan your website. What pages will your website have? What keywords will you use on your website? Planning it out on paper will help you maintain consistency. It’ll also help you stay organized. Finally, it’ll help you with the fourth step.

Decision time – During this step you’ll decide how you’re going to build your website. Will you build it yourself using a software program or design language? Will you outsource the project? Will you use a template? There are pros and cons to each choice. Take time to make the right choice for you and your needs.

Build your website! If you’ve accomplished the first four steps, this step will be much easier. If you’re outsourcing it then you can hand your plan and goals to your designer. If you’re doing it yourself then you know exactly how to get it done.

Creating your website doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Breaking the process down into manageable steps will help you make sure everything gets done.

The most important thing you can do to create a successful website is to sit down and plan it before you build it. As you plan your website you’ll want to keep these nine essential elements in mind. They include:

Landing page – This page is likely the first page your visitors will see. It will contain basic keywords to drive the search engines to your website. It also needs to set the mood for your website. What do you want visitors to do when they arrive at your landing page? This page needs to support that objective.

For example, if you want people to move deeper into your website then your content and call to action will support that

About me/us – This page will tell your story. Instead of publishing a resume or a list of accomplishments, personalize the page. Share your story; tell why you are the best person to do business with.

Simple navigation – Keyword research will help you organize your website so it’s easy for your visitors to find what they need. When in doubt, keep it simple

Content – Content is what will drive traffic to your website. It’s what people search for online. What type of content will you provide? How will you provide it? How will you organize it on your website and make it available?

Search – Consider offering a search function on your website. This way visitors can enter their search term and immediately find what they’re looking for.

Contact information – Will you include a separate page with your contact information? Will you include a form? Consider also putting your contact information in the footer of your web pages. This way it’ll be indexed by the search engines.

Opt in form – Will you build an email list? It’s a great way to sell products/services. Ideally, the form will be positioned above the fold. This means your visitor won’t have to scroll the page to see the form.

Eye catching design – The design on your page should support your brand image. It should also be simple and not distract from your goals or purpose.

Community building efforts – Consider integrating social networking buttons, comments, and other efforts to build a community at your website. When people feel involved or able to contribute they tend to revisit a website. Good for you, good for business!

Ready to plan? Hopefully this information has your creative juices flowing. Contact me to learn more about how to create a winning website.

WordPress is so much more than a blog. Many of you probably know about WordPress.com and the ability to create fast free blogs. You may even realize that you can self host WordPress by uploading the program to your own server space. But the fact is, WordPress is fast becoming the most used website building platform used for all websites being build today. There are so many reasons this is true but let’s look at seven of them.

Easy to Use — WordPress is easy for the lay person to learn and use to build very good websites within hours. One can find a template or “theme” in WordPress parlance, and then simply edit that theme to fit your needs without ever knowing any HTML or CSS. Once you learn how to customize a theme anything is possible.

Search Engine Optimisation — Otherwise known as SEO, search engine optimization is almost automatic within each theme that you use with WordPress. You can also get fabulous additional “plugins” that will make your SEO even better, without knowing a single line of code.

Great Support — Due to the fact that WordPress is an Open Source software there is a very active and helpful community. This means there are also a lot of people that can be hired to help you with your WordPress website if you don’t want to build it yourself. But, even if you do want to do it yourself there are also many people you can ask for help.

Awesome Add-on’s — WordPress has little add-on’s called extensions. These are also known as plugins. Plugins can be easily installed within just a few clicks on your WordPress website. They will give your site more functionality, such as adding on a shopping cart, affiliate program, or something smaller such as featured posts. Adding such fun items as fun commenting functions, polls, ratings, social media icons and more to your website becomes possible with just a few straight forward clicks.

Content is King — WordPress is much more than a blog, it is in fact, an entire content management system. We’ve all heard the phrase “Content is King” and this is true. WordPress allows the content to be the main part of your Website in focus. You can easily update content on any page of your site very simply without knowing any code at all. No need to ask your webmaster to do it.

Customisable – There are many Themes which provide the look and feel of your WordPress Website, but even the themes are very customizable if you learn to use CSS and HTML. Even if you don’t know how to use these things you can quickly learn due to all the tutorials available and all the help available within the active community on how to customize any theme. You can even have specialized themes made relatively inexpensively compared to old style Web Designer costs.

No Hostages Taken — You will not be held hostage by your website designer for every last thing that you want done to your site. Once the site is designed and built you can easily change things on your own. You can even find someone else entirely, like a Virtual Assistant who specializes in WordPress updates, to perform tasks on your WordPress site less expensively than a designer.

Using WordPress as the program of choice has many benefits to it, the benefits above are just but a few. Once you get started using WordPress to create your business website you’ll soon discover the ease in which you can design, build and maintain your business website with ease.

So if you fancy creating a website DIY, then contact me to book a place on one of my workshops

Before you build your website there are two things you must have. There’s no website without them.

They are: Your domain name – the address for your website And A website host

Let’s look at your domain name first. You want your domain name to be:

Easy to remember

Easy to spell

Descriptive so potential visitors can guess what your website is about. For example, JanesRecipes is a bit obscure. What kind of recipes? However, CountryCooking or CountryRecipes is more descriptive. Additionally, they contain keywords that people might use to find your information.

Once you have a few domain name ideas it’s time to register them. When possible, choose a .com address. They’re still the easiest to remember and accept as a legitimate website.

When registering your domain name you can register it through your website host or through a separate domain registrar. Price may often be the deciding factor. If you register your domain somewhere other than your host you’ll need to redirect the domain to your new host. Generally, the instructions to manage this process are simple and easy.

Choosing your Website Host

Choosing your host is a bit different than registering your domain name. Price isn’t the most important decider. You’ll also want to consider:

Is their control panel easy to use?

Can you upload your files easily?

Do they have the tools, features and functions you need?

Are they big enough for your needs? (Look for data space, bandwidth and file size limitations.)

Are they reliable?

Are they secure?

Are they well reviewed? Do they have a reputation for good customer service?

Consider sitting down and registering your domain name and choosing your host at the same time. It’ll simplify the process and you’ll only have to get your credit card out once.

Once you have your domain name and host it’s time to start planning and building your website.

Many people who are new to website designing for their business, think that they need an expensive web designer, or program like Dreamweaver to create a fashionable, functional, and full-featured website, but this is not true. WordPress often thought of as a blogging platform is really an open source software platform that enables you to build wonderful websites for your business.

WordPress enjoys a great support community full of people from all over the globe who can help answer questions that you might have. Additionally, right on the WordPress website are tutorial videos that can help you learn most of the basic functions of using WordPress as a full-featured Website designer. What makes all this even more amazing is that WordPress is free. Because WordPress is an open source software, you get to use it free. The license for WordPress is open ended and there are no restrictions about use for business or personal reasons like with some other types of open source software.

You can use WordPress to build dynamic:

Discussion Forum Websites

ecommerce Websites

Fully-Featured Community Portals

Large Business Websites

Paid Membership Communities

Sales Pages

Small Business Brochure Websites

Social Networking Websites

Video Websites

Websites with any functionality

Truly, only your imagination can hold you back when it comes to using WordPress in your business. From landing pages, to sales pages, to opt in pages, to download pages, you can build them with WordPress. Due to the fact that you can get both free and paid Themes, and both free and paid plugins to increase the functionality of a WordPress website there isn’t much that can’t be done with WordPress for your business.

If you already have an old fashioned HTML website or you’re using a more complicated builder such as Dreamweaver, Drupal or other builders definitely take a look at WordPress. Most people who switch to WordPress find it very easy to use. It is intuitive and works the way you think it will work with hardly any knowledge at all. Where you need knowledge you can find people to help due to the diverse and growing WordPress community. Additionally, if you wanted to outsource to someone it’s easy to find people who can help you at almost any budget.

WordPress is the preferred option for building not just blogs, but fully functional, dynamic and easy to use websites for any purpose. The fact that WordPress is free just ads to the joy of using WordPress in your business. Instead of spending money on expensive software you can divert that money to other uses. Most of the time, when a business owner finds out that something is free they think that means “cheap” but no one would define WordPress as cheap.

WordPress as the preferred website building tool among many business owners because it works. It is easy to update, has excellent built in SEO functions, and literally thousands of features due to the availability of paid and free extensions that add more to the functionality of your WordPress site.
